Picking up on his bullfighting scenes published in 1816, Goya again shows himself to be a master of lifelike representations of animals. But here he frames them in a bewilderingly paradoxical context. Wide-eyed and helpless, the four bulls – Spanish national animal and epitome of strength and courage – find themselves weightless, whirling around in a dark and infinite space.
