"Rocko Fasanella Obituary
Dr. Rocko M. Fasanella ORANGE, CT - Dr. Rocko M. Fasanella, 92, former chief of ophthalmology at the Yale School of Medicine and an internationally recognized surgeon, died suddenly on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at his home in Orange, CT. The son of immigrant parents, Dr. Fasanella was born on Aug. 4, 1916, and raised in Trenton, NJ. He attended Trenton Central High School,Yale College (Class of 1939), and completed his medical training at Yale in 1943. While a senior medical student, he was part of the team that administered the new miracle drug penicillin to a woman dying of septicemia following childbirth. She lived. This was the first successful use of the drug in the U.S. and represented more than half the supply available in the country at that time. He volunteered for World War II and served as a captain in the medical corps of the United States Army in France (1944-46). He trained subsequently at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to Yale for his residency in eye. A compassionate ophthalmologist, he exemplified the work ethic, was devoted to his patients, his family, his faith, and Yale. At age 35, Dr. Fasanella, a clinical associate professor, was appointed the first full-time chief at Yale in 1951, and was the youngest chief of any section at the time. During his 10-year tenure, he established full accreditation of the residency training program and organized continuing medical education with internationally known speakers. He spoke several languages and taught, wrote, edited and lectured internationally. His extensive international travels included early trips to Russia, China, and Cuba. His more than 70 scientific publications included the popular textbook "Management of Complications in Eye Surgery" which was translated into several languages. In 1961, Dr. Fasanella and his resident Dr. Javier Servat Sr. developed a simple surgical technique for the treatment of minimal ptosis (droopy lid) which was popularized as the Fasanella-Servat Procedure. A charter fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a lifelong member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he was a member of many professional organizations. Known as "Rocky" to his friends and colleagues, he celebrated the culture of Italy, enjoyed opera and other cultural activities, was an enthusiastic fisherman and after retirement golfed. He took great pleasure in sharing time with his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Marion Henry Fasanella; sons, Paul and George (Atty. Lisa Greco); parents Cecelia Tronolone and Vito Fasanella; brothers, Anthony and Carmen, and sister, Mary Ponticelli of Trenton, NJ. He is survived by four children, Marion Fasanella Petrelli (Dr. Richard Petrelli) of North Haven, Anne Fasanella of Westport, CT, Katherine Fasanella of Waccabuc, NY, Atty.
