Biography
Painter, draughtsman and print publisher.
"For a long time the dictionaries have said that Bourlier was born in 1672, but this, even if true, does not apply to the Bourlier associated with (...) various (...) prints. A François Bourlier engraver is mentioned by Marolles, 'Catalogue de livres d'estampes et de figures en taille douce', 1666 (...). A François Bourlier, painter, was admitted to the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1651, as is recorded in their list of 1672 (...). He is recorded as still alive in the same academy's list of 1682; a François Bourlier, peintre ordinaire du roy, was working from 1670 to 1679 (...). And there is a mention, clearly of the same man, of January 1674 in the 'Extraits des criées' (...). The earliest mention we have found of 1672 as the year of Bourlier's birth is in Zani, and the error we suspect may go back to him; for there a transference of the date to one column (birth) from the next (date of activity) would have caused it". (See Blunt & Davies, "Some corrections and additions to M. Wildenstein's 'Graveurs de Poussin au XVIIe siècle'", GBA 1962, vol. LX, p.208). Préaud adds that Bourlier was given a publication privilege in 1660." - https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/term/BIOG20496, 24.05.2021
