Biography
Book and print dealer and publisher in Venice. His shop was the 'Libreria al segno di San Marco' in Merzaria, from 1559. He shared this address with Ferrando Bertelli. Matriculated in the Arte dei Stampatori by 1 April 1571. 1 May 1563 he obtained a privilege to cover medical books he was publishing, where described as 'libraro in Marzaria all'insegna del San Marco' (Brown, Privilegi, Ms It vii 2500-2501, Biblioteca Marciana, Venice). In his will, 12 February 1587 (ASV, Notarile, busta 1242, no.200) he describes himself as 'Donato bertelli fu di m. Pietro libraro all Insegna di S. Marco'. The will does not seem to have been registered until 22 June 1623, so that was probably the date of his death.
Important as a publisher of maps (Borroni Salvadori and Tooley), devotional prints and portraits. Zenoi, Bonifacio, Rota, made engravings for him. He took over plates previously owned by Ferrando Bertelli (DBI).
