Friedrich III. von Sachsen (1463-1525) schützte Martin Luther nicht nur vor der Kirchengerichtsbarkeit, sondern nahm ihn auch vor dem Vollzug der kaiserlichen Acht in Schutz. Der Kurfürst Friedrich der Weise trug zur Ausbreitung der reformatorischen Ideen bei. Als Vorlage für das Porträt diente ein Gemälde von Lucas Cranach dem Älteren (1475-1553).
