In seinem vermutlich letzten gestochenen Bildnis porträtiert Dürer den Humanisten Erasmus von Rotterdam. Obwohl es in der Inschrift heißt, der Gelehrte sei nach dem Leben gezeichnet ("VIVAM EFFIGIEM DELINIATA"), monierten Erasmus und andere Zeitgenossen den Mangel an Treue des Porträts. Insofern ist vielleicht der griechische Teil der Inschrift wörtlich zu nehmen: Das bessere Bild von ihm zeigen seine Schriften.
