The riders and little horses found mostly in men's graves give an indication of the veneration of the deceased as heroised dead, for the horse has played an important role in the Greek cult of the dead since ancient times. In Boeotia in particular, the horses could also point to the mythical relationship with the once horse-shaped god Poseidon, whose son Boiotos was revered by the Boeotians as the eponym of the landscape.
