The young woman, turned to the left, is dressed in a belted peplos with a short coverlet and a foot-long cloak falling from her shoulders. In her left hand she holds an open rectangular box with a lid. According to the form and the iconographic representation, it could be a young woman or girl participating in the sacrifice as a helper. The participation of young girls in an administrative capacity at public sacrifices is nothing unusual, as long as proof was provided that they and their parents were freeborn and both parents were still alive. The function of this figure was that of an applique, an attachment piece for decoration on vessels, receptacles or surrounding altar friezes. (AVS)
