A link chain from braided, twisted plant fibre. The chain has a brownish colour; probably the fibre got darker and was originally lighter, probably yellow.
The chain presumably belongs to the collection of the cabinet of arts and curiosities from the Ulm merchant Christoph Weickmann and therefore must have been created before 1659. According to a catalogue from 1930, the chain could come from Central or West Africa.
