It is the so-called Nemes headscarf, introduced 2500 years earlier for the depictions of pharaohs, which also identifies this statue as the image of a pharaoh. Which ruler is represented, however, cannot be determined, because the Egyptians did not know portraits recognizable by individual facial features. It would have been exclusively a name inscribed on the statue in hieroglyphic writing that would have clearly identified the pharaoh. For stylistic reasons, however, the statue can be dated to the period in which Greek-born rulers ruled the country as pharaohs for 300 years after the conquest of Egypt by the Macedonian king Alexander the Great in 332 BC, the so-called Ptolemaic period. It is noteworthy that the upper part of the face and head of the limestone statue is made of plaster. Apparently, it had once been damaged in this area and was repaired by applying a thick layer of plaster. (CEL)
