The depictions on the A and B sides of this skyphos refer to musical competitions in which the focus was on playing an instrument, as well as singing or reciting. The A side shows a girl or a young woman dressed in a chiton. She is standing on a two-tiered bema (ancient Greek βήμα "step"), the raised stone tribune in the marketplace (agora), playing a double aulos. On the right in front of her a young standing man in front view. The left hand propped up on the hip is hidden under the cloak, the outstretched right resting on a branch. On the B side two young men are facing each other. The youth on the left holds a double aulos, the one on the right leans with his outstretched right hand on a crutch with a double-faced handle. Between the heads inscription: ΚΑΛΟΣ (beautiful). (AVS)
