The trozella is an Italic vase type that belongs to the Messapic vase art and only became native to Apulia around the middle of the 4th century BC. The form was probably adopted from Messapic pottery.
Messapic pottery represents an independent genre within Lower Italian ceramic production that developed from the 7th century BC onwards. In the early phase, the vessels are decorated with geometric patterns. From the 5th century BC, the decorative repertoire was enriched by meander bands and ivy and leaf patterns under increasing Greek influence. Finally, from the 4th century BC, a return to geometric decorations with isolated floral motifs can be discerned. This specimen belongs to this phase.
