The rural Boeotia was regarded by the Athenians as backward or 'old fashioned'. The art of Boeotia, which for a long time stuck to an old, traditional language of forms, also contributed to this view. This can also be seen, for example, in these depictions of female figures, so-called 'Papas'.
They consciously resort to the simplistic forms of the geometric phase (900–700 BC). However, certain contexts of finding, mostly graves, date them to the 6th century BC. They probably represent goddesses (Demeter or Hera?) who were placed in the grave of the deceased for protection. The pomegranate pendant refers to the fertility aspect of the figure. (AVS)
