Nach Lehrjahren zwischen 1735 und 1744 in Wien, Venedig, Bologna und Rom arbeitete L. ab 1750 in Mannheim als Theatermaler. Er wurde 1769 von Carl Theodor zum ersten Historien- und Freskomaler sowie 1770 zum Professor der neu gegründeten Zeichnungsakademie ernannt.
