Biography
London map and printseller; for his trade card see Banks 100.104, which indicates that he learned his trade under Robert Sayer, with whom he sometimes worked in partnership. Many of his plates later taken over by Sayer. Two nearly identical (except for the address) trade cards in Heal Collection, and two in Banks Collection. Heal,100.71 & 72, and Banks,100.104 & 105 advertise "John Smith Map and Printseller, At Hogarth's head facing Wood street Cheapside, London (From Mr. Sayer's, in Fleet Street.) Sells all Sorts of fine French & English Prints, Maps, Drawings, Books, Copy Books, Books of Ornaments, Portfolios of all Sizes, Water Colours, Indian Ink, Watch Papers, Black Lead & hair Pencils, Variety of Perspective Views for the Diagonal, Mirrors and those Glasses likewise. Also Frames and Glazes Prints, Drawings & Paintings in the Neatest manner. Puts Maps on Cloth and Rollers & gives the Most money for Old Prints and Drawings. N.B. He Colours all sorts of Prints in the neatest Manner, &c." Heal's annotations on mount: "In Mr. Citroen's collection is a card of John Smith at the Hogarth's Head, opposite Wood St., Cheapside. An almost exactly similar trade-card (Heal,100.72) is in A.H.'s collection with the address at the Hogarth's Head, near Friday St. Cheapside & with Mr. Sayer's name omitted. 1777 Directory gives 'Jn.
