"Saalmüller, Karl Heinrich
S. (b. 29 November 1829, Heldburg, Thuringia, Germany, d. 1906) was a Protestant lay missionary and craftsman active in Ethiopia from 1859 to 1868 in the mission led by the St. Chrischona-Pilgermission and Bishop Gobat. Originally, S. was a locksmith; in 1854 he joined the missionary courses at St. Chrischona, graduated in 1857 and then worked in Löwenthal. Due to Tewodros II's demand for craftsmen he was sent to Ethiopia in October 1858 to work for him in Mäqdäla. In 1860 S. joined the craftmen's colony of Gafat. In his reports S. showed a quite pronounced pessimism towards the possibility of reforming the Ethiopian Church, in contrast to some of his more optimistic co-missionaries (Strebel 2001:148). However, he believed that craftmanship could help considerably in "civilizing" Ethiopia. Together with the former tsarist soldier Hall and his later brother-in-low Waldmeier, S. cast the famous cannon "Sebastopol" for the Ethiopian ruler (Smidt 2005a:307).
In ca. 1866/67 S. was married by Tewodros to Bällätacc (also Mary; b. 1853 Däbrä Tabor, d. 1 October 1936 Brummana, Lebanon) of Ditäm (mount Guna, Bägemdar), the daughter of the royal advisor liqä mäkwas Bell and Tewodros's eldest grandniece wäyzäro Wärquenäs Yelma Asfaw (b. ca. 1830/32; daughter of wäyzäro Wesän Kenfu, b. ca. 1815. d. after 1855). During the last weeks of Tewodros's reign only Hall, Waldmeier and S. remained on good therms with Tewodros. Unlike the others, they were not chained, but remained his courtiers until the end. ... After having been bought out of Ethiopia by the British army under Napier in 1868, S. and his wife joined the mission in Jaffa together with Hall, and, in 1874, Waldmeier's school in Brummana, Lebanon, where he taught craftmanship to boys ..."
