Der Deutschamerikaner Franz X. Wagner patentierte 1893 die Vorderaufschlagmaschine mit voll sichtbarer Schrift, deren Technik den Standard für über 60 Jahre setzte. Der Unternehmer John T. Underwood brachte sie als „Underwood No. 1“ 1896 in den USA auf den Markt.
